When I first installed CoD4 and changed my sound options to 5.1 I got some major feed back. It was like a loud hammering noise. But when I switched over to Stereo output everything was fine. I don't mind playing in stereo mode for SP, but for MP I think I will definitely want my surround sound. Does anyone else get a problem like this or has anyone ever had a problem like this? I'm guessing it's because my sound card is roughly 6 years old and isn't supported by Creative anymore. This would give me a good reason to upgrade my sound card, but I would rather not if I don't have to.

YA...6 years..I would just upgrade, I will say I have been having some problems making connection to servers when I first join...I time out 3-6 times..then I can join any game faster than in COD2. Strange I would say...I know DX had to reformat his shit to get better ping I think. I think I will have to upgrade, in a few ways, to get my pc up to par.

well not just had to do that its was vista i didnt have but 1 1/2 gig of ram try updateing your divers rapist theres sounds card cod4 doesnt Support yet Most sound issues can be resolved by ensuring you have the latest AC97 drivers for your sound card installed. Check the website of your sound card manufacturer for the latest AC97 driver release if you are encountering problems with audio playback. i dont think you have that rapists i know i was haveing dx error If you encounter the following error: "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_34.dll was not found it was installed i am runing 5.1 with np

The new soundcard doesn´t always help. I have Creative´s Ultimate Audio X-Fi (or something) soundcard but still I got problems with sounds.. Like in new Pro Evolution Soccer.. It might be a bug in COD that´s causing it. Don´t know though.. But for ur OWN sake upgrade ur soundcard, and ur life is much more pleasable

I'm using onboard audio that supports 7.1 and I'm using a 7.1 speaker system and I'm not having any problems.

I would update my drivers except that Creative doesn't support my sound card anymore, it's been discontinued. I might switch over to my onboard sound tonight and see if that helps, even though that will potentially hurt FPS.
I was thinking about upgrading to the X-Fi XtremeGamer, but I've heard some people get snapping and crackling noises in BF2142. I hardly ever pay that, so it's not that big of a deal, but...if I could get my current sound card to work I'm gonna keep it. It's been really good to me thus far.

You need surround sound for gaming ? Just stick with the stereo sound if it works like you said, it's probably just a matter of getting used to !!!

I've heard about those same issues in the past but I think they might be resolved because I haven't about any problems with them lately. If I got a soundcard that was probably what I would get. Newegg has three different kinds to choose from (as far as the extreme gamer model goes) and this one was the middle of the range in price and would be the one I would get. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102005

You need surround sound for gaming ? Do I NEED it? ...well no, but I have the capability to have it, so I like to. Yeah, I was looking at that Pine. Little pricey, but it looks ok. I don't play bf2142 much anyhow.

I think upgrade is the way to fix the problem, spend the 40-60$ and it will be all better...

yeah, i never did find a fix for this. I'm still playing in stereo mode. I might order a new card next month. I've been looking at the HT Omega Claro. It's a new company and I've heard some good things. Another card I was thinking about was the new ASUS PCI-E card. Looks promising.
EDIT: I just bought the Razer Barracuda AC-1 sound card. Normally it's around $170, but it was on woot.com today for $67 + $5 shipping. My headphones/speakers don't have the HD-DAI connector, but the card supposedly comes with a converter for digital to analog, here's hoping. I'll keep you all posted. It will most likely be a big improvement from my 6 year old sound card...I hope.
